Homemade Sorica food with a twist

In the picturesque village of Sorica, which once inspired one of the greatest Slovenian painters, Ivan Grohar, lies Guesthouse Tolc.

As if created after the painter’s work, the village of Sorica is spread across an uneven plain amidst fields, pastures and endless coniferous forests. The village is also home to the Tolc homestead, first mentioned in the year 1293. Meta and Primož Pintar, the owners of Guesthouse Tolc, renovated the homestead and dedicated it to tourism. They started renting out accommodation, and provided an excellent culinary offer, available from Friday to Sunday, while the rest of the week, the family works on the farm.

They brought as much of the local environment as possible into the homestead. They took the wood from a village farm, and decorated the inn with impressionist paintings by local painter, Miro Kačar. In this way, they attempt to preserve the heritage of one of the most esteemed Slovenian painters, the Sorica native, Ivan Grohar. In addition to four thematically decorated rooms, the inn also has a room with a fireplace, intended especially for romantic dinners for two. In summer, they also serve food on the terrace or in the hidden garden.

Impressionism on a plate

At Guesthouse Tolc, the equipment on the premises and the choice of contractors follow the same concept as the food – local and self-made. Whenever possible, the ingredients come from their own organic farm. Anything that cannot be grown on this mountain farm is instead obtained from neighbouring villages in the Škofja Loka area.

The menu offers mainly meat dishes, as well as trout, and also stews, traditional “štruklji” rolled dumplings, and strudel. They offer interesting appetisers such as a plate of buckwheat “krapi” with pear cream and bacon, or “žlikrofi” in egg sauce with cracklings and black trumpet mushrooms. They also serve daily lunches and tasting menus.

Meet the chef

Sometimes, the menu can be changed several times a week

Chef Primož Pintar creates traditional Slovenian dishes with a slight twist.

Immediately after completing his studies at the Higher Vocational School of Hospitality and Tourism in Bled, he began his independent journey. After 17 years of working at Gostišče Macesen in Sorica, in 2019, he decided it was time for a change, and opened Guesthouse Tolc.

In the kitchen, he uses exclusively seasonal, mostly organic ingredients, from which he loves to create modern dishes based on old recipes. The traditional Slovenian dishes are still recognisable, but different and interesting at the same time.

He is helped in the kitchen by his mother Marija Pintar, who also takes care of the barn and garden with his father Janez.
